Start with the foundations, not the pretty photos
It is tempting to fall for a venue online before you've worked out whether it fits your day. Before you look at a single gallery, agree three things between you: a rough budget, an approximate guest number and a season or a couple of possible dates.
These three decisions do more to narrow your options than anything else. A hundred and eighty guests rules out intimate country houses; a tight budget rules out exclusive castle hire; a peak-summer Saturday limits availability. Getting honest about them early saves a lot of wasted viewings.
Decide what matters most to you
Every couple weighs things differently. Talk through what would make the day feel like yours, and rank a few priorities so you can make trade-offs later.
Location: close to home, a scenic destination, or easy for travelling guests.
Setting and style: coastal, country, city, historic or a blank canvas.
Accommodation: rooms on site for guests, or a venue near plenty of options.
Exclusivity: the only wedding that day, or happy to share the building.
Catering and drink: in-house packages, or the freedom to bring your own suppliers.
Shortlist, then view in person
Once your foundations and priorities are set, build a shortlist of a handful of venues that genuinely fit, not twenty. Then visit the ones that make the cut. Photographs flatter; a visit tells you how a place really feels, flows and sounds.
Try to see a venue set up for a wedding, or at least ask to view the actual rooms you'd use. Picture the day from a guest's point of view: where they arrive, where drinks happen, how they move to dinner, and where they'll sleep.
Compare the full cost, not the headline price
A low venue-hire fee can end up dearer than an all-inclusive package once catering, drinks, furniture and extras are added. When you compare venues, compare the total realistic cost for your numbers, on your date, with everything you'll actually need.
Ask what is included, what is extra, and whether there are minimum spends or midweek and off-season rates. The cheapest venue on paper is rarely the cheapest wedding.
Trust the feeling, then check the detail
When a venue feels right, it usually is. But before you sign, confirm the practical detail: your date's availability, the deposit and cancellation terms, wet-weather plans and how many other weddings they hold that day.
