It's not a hard rule. Some book two years out to secure a specific venue; others put a wedding together in a few months. But twelve to eighteen months is the sweet spot for choice without unnecessary pressure.
Why popular venues go early
The best-known venues have a limited number of prime dates each year, and demand for them is high. Peak-summer Saturdays at sought-after venues are often taken eighteen months to two years in advance, sometimes more.
If you have your heart set on a particular venue or an exact date, treat it as urgent. Enquire early, ask what dates they still hold, and be ready to move once you've viewed it.
Booking by season and day
Peak summer Saturdays: book earliest, often 18 months to 2 years ahead.
Spring and autumn weekends: strong demand, but more availability at 12 to 18 months.
Winter and off-season dates: the easiest to secure, and usually the best value.
Midweek dates: far more availability, often bookable on shorter timelines.
Can you still book on a short timeline?
Yes. Plenty of couples book within six to nine months, and some inside three. The trick is flexibility: if you can be open on the exact date, the day of the week or the season, you'll find good venues with availability even at short notice.
Off-peak and midweek dates are your friend here. A venue that's fully booked for summer Saturdays may have excellent winter or midweek availability at a better price.
